Key Features of the PGWP

Open Work Permit

Validity Period

The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of the study program
8 months to less than 2 years: The PGWP is usually valid for the same length of time as the study program.
2 years or more: The PGWP can be valid for up to 3 years.
Graduates can only obtain a PGWP once in their lifetime.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have completed a study program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that lasted at least 8 months and led to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
The program must be full-time, except for the final academic session, which can be part-time if it’s the last semester of the program.
Applicants must have held a valid study permit at some point during the 180 days before applying for the PGWP.
Graduates must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving their final transcript and an official letter from their school confirming they have completed their program requirements.
If more than 50% of the study program was completed through distance learning (online), the applicant may not be eligible for the PGWP. However, temporary measures have been in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing online studies to count towards PGWP eligibility.
