A Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to enter Canada for temporary purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or conducting short-term business activities.

Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

Most travelers need a visitor visa to enter Canada, although citizens from visa-exempt countries may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.

Eligibility Criteria

Single-Entry Visa

  • Allows the holder to enter Canada only once. If the traveler leaves Canada (except for visits to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon), they would need a new visa to re-enter.

Multiple-Entry Visa

  • Allows the holder to enter and leave Canada multiple times within the visa’s validity, typically up to 10 years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Holders can stay in Canada for up to 6 months per visit.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have a Valid Passport: A passport that is valid for the duration of the intended stay in Canada.
  • Proof of Financial Support: Demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover their expenses while in Canada, including accommodation, travel, and living expenses.
  • Ties to Home Country: Show strong ties to their home country, such as employment, family, property, or financial commitments, to prove they will return at the end of their visit.
  • Intent to Leave Canada: Applicants must convince the visa officer that they will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
  • Medical Examination (if required): In some cases, applicants may be asked to undergo a medical examination, especially if they plan to stay for more than six months or come from countries with certain health risks.
  • Admissibility: Applicants must not have a criminal record and must not be considered a security risk to Canada.

Extending Your Stay in Canada

  • If visitors wish to extend their stay beyond the authorized period, they must apply for an extension at least 30 days before their status expires.
